SPHERIC – Kirsten Klein 80 years
In 2026, Holstebro Kunstmuseum is delighted to present an exhibition dedicated to Kirsten Klein, celebrating the esteemed photographer’s 80th birthday.
Since the 1980s, Kirsten Klein has established herself as one of Denmark’s most significant photographic artists, widely recognised for her technically masterful black-and-white landscapes, which are well represented in Danish museum collections and numerous publications.
A thorough exploration of Klein’s extensive archive in recent years has revealed lesser-known but deeply compelling aspects of her lifelong work that deserve to be seen by a wider audience. These include her depictions of everyday life and rural culture on the island of Mors, as well as more anthropological images from her encounters with people across the world – images that capture the rich diversity of human existence across the world and portrays their daily life as it shapes and is being shaped by the surrounding landscape.
Kirsten Klein received her first camera at the age of eleven and knew early on that she wanted to pursue photography as an art form and live in close connection with nature. Not out of nostalgia or romanticised ideals of the countryside, but from a deep-rooted belief that, as a physical, sensing being, she is an inseparable part of nature’s endless and intricate cycles. This holistic view of life and nature has shaped Klein’s artistic practice as well as her personal life, and perhaps this is what gives her such a remarkable ability to observe, feel, and capture the landscapes and people she has encountered over a lifetime. From a grounded and humble perspective, she reveals how meteorological, climatic, bodily, and cultural forces are interconnected and mutually dependent.
The exhibition aims to highlight the continued relevance and breadth of Klein’s artistic vision. It will be one of the most comprehensive presentations of her work to date and is being developed in collaboration with Munkeruphus, where it will be shown in 2025.
